He was the second son of the late James R. and Audrey Pugh White. He died on Friday, August 23, 2013, after a courageous 4 year battle against cancer. He was predeceased by brother, James R. White, Jr., nephew, Christopher M. White, Jr. and brother- in- law, Robert Stewart Jr. He is survived by his beloved wife (his words!) Ellen Mary Stewart, his brother, Christopher M. White, Sr., nephews, Russell W. White, Marlin Remick, III, grand-nephew, Christopher Russell Matthews; nieces, Jennifer White Matthews, her husband, David, and son, Spencer, Meghan Jilg, and son, Elijah Twine, Margaret Ellen Cuneo, and her husband, Luke. Mother- in-law, Roselyn Stewart, sisters-in-law, Sydney Stewart, Morgan Duncan, and her husband, Michael, and Joy Stewart. Additionally, many loving extended family: nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, in Greensboro, NC. Russell will be missed also by his Aunt Adelaide Bishop and numerous cousins and their spouses in the White family. Also, Aunt Sarah Pugh, cousins Robin, Kenny, Gayle and their spouses and children. Also very special friends, Pat and Sue Yerby, Pat and David Dutcher, and chosen extended family in St. Thomas, USVI. Russell attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church and elementary school, where he was an altar boy, member of the choir, and proudly earned the Ad Altari Dei Medal from the Boy Scouts of America. He graduated from Norfolk Catholic High School, earned his BS at ODU and MSW at NSU. Russell and Ellen moved to St. Thomas, VI, in 1986. He became a PADI Scuba Instructor and earned his USCG Master's license. He was proud to be a partner of Red Hook Dive Center in St. Thomas. He loved the sea and enjoyed this adventuresome career for 26 years. Russell was deeply loved by Ellen and everyone who knew him. He made life look so easy with his carefree, real, honest and genuine pursuit of happiness. It was infectious and if you knew him and caught it, it will be with you forever. A Memorial Mass will be conducted Saturday, August 31, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m., August 30, at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel. There will be a Celebration of Life event for Russell at a later date in St. Thomas, USVI.
