Whitehurst Dies At Age Of 69 Former City Councilman and Prominent Freight Traffic Official Succumbs John T. Whitehurst, aged 69, died at his residence, 1315 Cornwall place, last night at 10:05 o'clock after an illness of three months. He was a son of the late George T. and Mrs. Virginia Holmes Whitehurst. He was a native of Princess Anne County. He had been a resident of Norfolk for the past 48 years. He was associated with the Norfolk Southern Railroad as freight agent for more than 25 years. Following this he was with the Lake Drummond Canal Company 19 years, serving as traffic manager, and at the time of his death was associated with the Albemarle & Chesapeake Canal Company. Mr. Whitehurst was a member of the City Council under the old form of municipal government and was for many years a member and deacon of the Berkley Avenue Baptist Church, and for the past several years he was a member of the Freemason Street Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Wood Whitehurst; a daughter, Mary Wood Whitehurst; three sisters, Mrs. Hattie Hall, Mrs. Lewis E. Hall and Mrs. O.W. Guy, all of Norfolk, and a brother, Eugene Whitehurst of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at the family residence tomorrow at 12 o'clock noon. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery, Berkley. ************** John T. Whitehurst - Funeral services for Mr. Whitehurst were conducted at the family residence, 1315 Cornwall place, yesterday at noon by the Rev. Sparks W. Melton, pastor of Freemason Street Baptist Church; the Rev. R.D. Stephenson, of Franklin; the Rev. Beacher L. Rhodes, pastor of Berkley Avenue Baptist Church, and the Rev. R.E.F. Aler, of Larchmont Baptist Church. There was a profusion of flowers and the services were largely attended. The casket was covered with sprays of red roses and ferns. Pallbearers were R.A. McCoy, Hugh Johnson, P.M. Pritchard, W.B. Hastings, Robert R. Ford, A. Linton Jones, John B. Hamilton, W.E. Freeman and E.W. Smith, Jr. Burial was in the family plot in Magnolia Cemetery.
