Virginian Pilot and The Norfolk Landmark December 14, 1924

Jeptha Thomas Whitley, 77, whose son, William Carlton Whitley, was burned to 
death at his home, 17 Lafayette avenue, South Norfolk, Sunday night, 
November 30, died yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the home of his son 
Leroy Whitley, 1213 Liberty street, after a lingering illness.  Mr. Whitley 
was a son of the late Axom and Mrs. Mary Barnes Whitley, Hertford, N.C., but 
had made his home in this section 20 years.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. S.J. Putney, Rosemary, N.C., Mrs. 
Samuel Green, South Norfolk, Mrs. N.S. Dudley, Cincinnati, Ohio and three 
sons, J.P. Whitley, Fort Monroe, Leroy Whitley, Norfolk and H.C. Whitley, 
Quantico, Va. and one brother, C.H. Whitley, Franklin, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at the residence Monday afternoon at 3:30 
o'clock.  Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
