The Virginian Pilot Friday October 14, 1955
SOUTH NORFOLK - Leroy Whitley, 72, owner and operator of a grocery store on the 
Great Bridge Road, died yesterday at 12:15 a.m. at his home, 2025 Hemple Street, 
after a short illness.
A native of Hertford County, N.C., he had lived in this section for the last 52 
years. His and Mrs. Ella Cullins Whitley. He was a member of Providence Baptist 
Church. 
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Cordelia Sawyer Whitley; one daughter, Mrs. Hattie 
Riggs, of South Norfolk; one son, William Lemuel Whitley, of Norfolk, and two 
sisters, Mrs. Bessie Putney, of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and Mrs. Nannie Sue 
Dudley, of Long Beach, Calif. 
Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Graham Funeral 
Home. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery, Norfolk.
