Whitworth, 88, Long Had Been Active In Tidewater Affairs Capt. John Stansfield Whitworth, aged 88, veteran of 27 battles of the War Between the States and for many years superintendent of floating equipment of the Atlantic Coast Line, died at the residence of his daughter, Mr. W. G. Larmour, 207 West Indian River road, yesterday morning at 1:30 o'clock after a long illness. Born at Manchester, September ?5, 1836, he was the son of Sallie Stansfield and John Whitworth, who came to this country from Rochdale, England, in 1828. As a member of the Rocky Ridge Rifles he served at Harpers Ferry during the insurrection of 1859. In 1861 he entered the service of the Confederacy as a lieutenant of Company I, Sixth Virginia Infantry, Mahone's Brigade. He was promoted to captain of the company in 1862, serving in this capacity for the remainder of the war. He was seriously wounded in Wilson's Raid, June 22, 1864. After Lee's surrender, Captain Whitworth entered civil life as an employee of the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad, late becoming connected with the Atlantic Coast Line. Vestryman 40 Years A resident of Berkley since 1880, Captain Whitworth had held an honored place in the community, taking an active part in social, business and municipal affairs. As a vestryman in both St. Paul's and St. Thomas' (now St. Bride's) churches, he had a record of 40 years continuous service. Captain Whitworth is survived by two daughters, Mrs. A.O. Calcott and Mrs. W.G. Larmour, both of this city. Another daughter, Mrs. Jennie Bennett Hollingsworth, died in January 1923. Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at St. Bride's Episcopal Church. Members of the Masonic lodges have been called upon to attend in a body.
