JAMES R. WILLIAMS DIES; RETIRED FUNERAL DIRECTOR South Norfolk Resident Long Was Active In Business and Fraternal Affairs SOUTH NORFOLK - James Romulus Williams, 90, retired Southside funeral director, of 1027 Chesapeake Ave., died Thursday at 11:25 a.m. in an Norfolk hospital. He had been in failing health the last several years. Born at Lake Drummond, Norfolk County, he was a son of Daniel and Mrs. Minerva Lynch Williams. His earlier education was received in Norfolk County schools. Later he entered Yadkin Mineral Spring Academy, and then the Hannaman Medical College in Pennsylvania He moved to Berkley as a young man and in 1893 opened the J.R. Williams Funeral Home. Later he continued the funeral establishment at his residence in South Norfolk. At his retirement in 1950, he had been a funeral director for 60 years. Other Activities He was a retired director of the Atlantic Permanent Building and Loan Assn., past president (1911) of the Virginia State Funeral Directors Assn., a member of the Kiwanis Club of Berkley, and chairman of the South Norfolk draft board during World War II. He was a Boy Scout committeeman for 10 years. Long active in fraternal affairs on the Southside and in Berkley, he was a member of South Norfolk Lodge 339 A.F.& A.M., member for 50 years of Doric Lodge 44, A.F.& A.M., and of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, No. 70, South Norfolk. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary McCloud Williams; one daughter, Mrs. W. Leary Cooper; two sons, Hunter S. Williams Sr., and Capt. Nelson B. Williams USA (Ret.); one brother, Lee A. Williams, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, all of Norfolk. The body was taken to the Francis A. Gay Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Berkley Avenue Baptist Church. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
