A lifelong resident of Norfolk, he was born in Berkley. He was a son of J.R. Williams, who formerly operated a funeral home in South Norfolk, and Mrs. Mamie Baker Williams. He was the husband of Mrs. Launa Lael Williams. Williams was an authority not only on Berkley but also on private and government naval activities in the area. At the time of his death he had amassed a large collection of books and documents. His collection of old photographs of Norfolk area buildings and scenes and the ships that once frequented its harbor was well known. Williams led the effort to save the USS Hartford, Adm. David G. Farragut's flagship at Mobile Bay in 1864, when he learned it had been tied up near Berkley to rot away. Unfortunately, the historic ship was too far gone to merit restoration, but Williams was responsible for saving many valuable mementos from the hulk that became a part of his or other local collections. He also was responsible for the presentation of many valuable Berkley area records to the Sargeant Memorial Room of Kirn Memorial Library. Among these are the records of his father's funeral establishment, containing information that antedated the keeping of vital statistics by the state and the city. He was a member of St. Brides Episcopal Church. He was an Army veteran of World War I and was long active in American Legion Post 280, Great Bridge. Besides his widow, surviving are a son, Hunter S. Williams Jr., of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Womack of Norfolk and Mrs. Matthew Phelan of Atlanta; a sister, Mrs. Leary Cooper of Norfolk; eight grandchildren; and a great grandchild. The body was taken to Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home.
