Willis, widely known as the “Mother” of the Garden of Prayer churches in which her son, the Rev. Levi Willis, was a minister. Giving the eulogy was Bishop D. Lawrence Williams, pastor, Mother Church of God In Christ. Mrs. Willis died Feb. 12 at her residence, 1246 W. 44th street, at the age of 55 after a short illness. The daughter of the late Isaac and Mrs. Christine Garris, and a native of Vanceboro, NC, she had lived in Norfolk 16 years. She held a very active membership in the Garden of Prayer Church of God in Christ where she served as a leading lady and was supervisor of the women’s departments of the three Garden of Prayer churches in Norfolk. She is survived by her husband, Odell Willis; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Lee Williams, Detroit MI; five sons, Earl Willis of Brooklyn NY; Isaac Willis of Philadelphia PA; the Rev. Levi Willis, pastor of the Garden of Prayer Church, Park avenue; James Willis and Lindbergh Willis, both of Norfolk; one sister, Mrs. Thelma Ray of Kinston, NC; seven brothers, Leonard Garris and Odell Garris, both of Fayetteville, NC; Ira Garris and Leo Garris, both of Vanceboro NC; Victor Garris and Quinton Garris, both of Philadelphia; and Earl Garris of Brooklyn NY; and 12 grandchildren. Burial was in the family plot in Calvary Cemetery, with the Riddick Funeral Service in charge.
