Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - December 25, 2011
Virginia Beach - On December 20, 2011, an angel " Shirley Hawkins Winder ", of 
the 2000 block of Seaboard Rd went to join her Lord and Savior. She was born 
July 7th to Lucille Pace and the late George Hawkins. She was preceded in 
death by her husband Leroy Winder , special mother Carrie Hill, step-father 
Charles Pace, Grandmother Mary Alice Redmond, mother in law Alean Winder ; two 
sisters, Joyce Jackson and Evelyn Jefferson, and aunt, Ethel Evans. She was a 
graduate of Booker T. Washington, 71 and Norfolk State University. She worked 
for the May Company (Miller & Rhodes, Hecht's and Macy's) for over 30 years. 
She was a proud member of the NAACP, National Cancer Society, HUGS Cancer 
Support Group and Today's Women Group. Her memory is cherished by her daughter 
Rhonda (Junior), two grandchildren Michael and Myles, four sisters and a host 
of other relatives and friends. Special thanks to the staff at VA Oncology 
Associates. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at 
Metropolitan Funeral Home, 7246 Granby Street, Norfolk, Va.
