He died in less than 10 minutes after he was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital. Young Wood was struck by an automobile operated by Napoleon Capps, 21, Negro, of Seatack, Princess Anne County, who brought him to the hospital, according to city and county police. Sergeant C.L. Maynard, of the State police, who took over the investigation, said Capps would be arraigned on a charge of manslaughter. Inquest Tuesday Dr. C.D.J. McDonald, city coroner, viewed Wood's body last night and said he died of a fractured skull, a crushed right chest and a compound leg fracture. He said an inquest would be conducted Tuesday, April 26. The coroner said the youth had other visible bruises and abrasions over the body. Sergeant Maynard said Wood was walking toward Virginia Beach when he was struck by the automobile near Davis Corner. He quoted the driver as saying, "It looked like the man suddenly stepped in front of my car." The body was removed to the Graham Funeral Home, Berkley, pending funeral arrangements. ****************************************************** ACCIDENT VICTIM'S FUNERAL WILL BE CONDUCTED TODAY Funeral services for Joel Vernon Wood, 20, of Hollywood, R.F.D. No. 2, Princess Anne County, who was killed by an automobile Saturday night on the Virginia Beach Boulevard, near Davis' Corner, will be conducted this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Kempsville Baptist Church. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery, Berkley. In addition to his parents, Joel and Jennie Howard Wood, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. John Burk, of Washington, D.C. He was a native of Augusta County and had made his home in Princess Anne County for 18 years. Wood was killed while walking on the boulevard toward Virginia Beach Saturday night about 8:15 o'clock. He was brought to St. Vincent's Hospital by Napoleon Capps, 21, Negro, of Seatack, listed by county police as the driver of the car which struck him, but died in less than 10 minutes after arrival. A charge of manslaughter was placed against Capps by Sergt. C. L. Maynard, State trooper, who conducted an investigation.
