The son of Chester Surry Wood and Lula Ethel Orr, Surry was born in Little Rock, Ark., May 7, 1917. During World War II, Surry served in the Coast Guard. Following this, he began his career at the David Taylor Research Center, Department of the Navy in Washington, D.C. He worked as part of a team of sonar specialists until his retirement in 1972. His career took him all over the world. Following retirement, he moved to Nags Head where he resided for the next nine years until moving to Norfolk. Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his first wife, Corinne Smith, also from Little Rock. He is survived by his second wife, Mary Ferebee Taylor Wood and two stepchildren, Randy Lougee of Norfolk and her husband Duane and Jack Taylor of Austin, Texas, and his partner Peter Maxson. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Scuffie, who, at 20 pounds, was often seen walking Surry around his neighborhood. During his lifetime, Surry was active in numerous civic organizations. Most recently, he had served on the Board of the old Norfolk Senior Citizen's Center on 21st Street and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a member of the Optimist Club of Norfolk and the Cape Henry Chapter of the National Audubon Society. He was an avid bridge player and a knowledgeable naturalist. The family wants to give special thanks to Sharon Copeland and Edith Pope who have helped with his care through several illnesses.
