She was the daughter of the late Mary Etta Johnson Jones and the late Harry Nathan Jones and the widow of James Edward Woodard. Mrs. Woodard, a native of Norfolk, retired from the Norfolk Public School System after 33 years of dedicated service. She was a member of the First Class of the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University (now Norfolk State University) and a graduate of Virginia Union University. She did post graduate studies at Hampton University and the University of North Carolina. As a faithful member of Metropolitan AME Zion and Greater Metropolitan AME Zion churches, she was involved in many phases of church life. She was a former trustee and served as the church clerk for many years. Mrs. Woodard was a life member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Education Association of Norfolk and the District L Educators Association. she was also affiliated with the Alumni chapters of Norfolk State University and Virginia Union University, the American Association of Retired Persons, the National Retired Teachers Association, the Coronado-Inglenook Civic League and the Golden Years Club of Mount Olive Baptist Church. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Metropolitan Funeral Home, Granby Street, Norfolk, with Elder Isaac Coaxum officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery . The family and friends will assemble at 1101 Church St., Norfolk, at noon for the procession. The family will receive visitors at the same address. Memorial donations may be made to the Mary Etta Jones Endowed Scholarship Fund, Virginia Union University, 1500 N. Lombardy St., Richmond, VA 23220 or the Mary Etta Jones Endowed Scholarship Fund, Norfolk State University Foundation, 700 Park Ave., Norfolk, VA 23504.
