Woodard Sr., 91, of the 8000 block of Tidal Road, passed into eternal life surrounded by his loving family Wednesday, April 20, 2011 in his residence. Mr. Woodard was the son of the late Arthur and Arrie Woodard and was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mary Venuto Woodard. He was a native of Conway, S.C., and lived in Norfolk for most of his life. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served his country for over 20 years. He was a pioneer in the local real estate market and was the president and owner of Woodard Realty, LLC, since 1956. He was a Roman Catholic and a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Norfolk Council 367. He was a charter member of what is now REIN Inc. John was a loving husband, daddy, granddaddy and pop-pop who always put his family and friends first. He loved music and enjoyed playing the piano and his clarinet. John had a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother and did much to encourage others to pray the rosary. Survivors include his children, Mary Joan Woodard of Norfolk, John J. Woodard Jr. and his wife Joanna of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Arthur J. Woodard and his wife Debra of Virginia Beach; his sister, Margaret Thompson of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and his brother Joe Woodard and his wife Sandra of Columbia, S.C. He is also survived by his grandchildren, John J. Woodard, III, and his wife Amy of Elizabeth City, Carol Shewell and her husband Robert of Virginia Beach, Jennifer Machmer and her husband Craig of Virginia Beach, Ryan J. Woodard of Falls Church, Va.; and his precious great-grandchildren, Ashley and Katie Machmer and Alyssa and Sean Shewell, and many loving nieces and nephews. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 27, by the Rev. Father Mario Fulgenzi, O.S.B. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The rosary will be prayed in the Norfolk chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., followed by a visitation with the family until 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Gregory the Great Catholic School.
