Wooden, 93, of the 1400 block of W. 38th St., was called from labor to her just reward on Saturday morning, Oct. 16, 1999, at Sentara Nursing Center. She was a native of Norfolk and was the daughter of James and Lottie Robinson Jones. She was the widow of Moses Wooden. A faithful member of First Baptist Church Lambert's Point, she was active in many phases of church life. Mrs. Wooden was extremely civic-minded and had been a member of the Lambert's Point Civic League and the Norfolk City Democratic Committee. In addition, Mrs. Wooden along with one of her sisters, Kate Kindrid, had been instrumental in helping persons to become elected to local, state and national office. They would host political fund-raisers in their homes for various candidates. Some of the candidates for whom she worked tirelessly were Lt. Gov. Henry B. Howell, Del. William P. Robinson Sr., Betty Howell, Joseph A. Jordan and in later years Del. Jerrauld C. Jones and Vice Mayor Herbert M. Collins Sr. Her civic involvement also included endless hours with the late Evelyn Butts in voter registration drives. She was also a member of the United Order of Tents Excelsior No. 82 Chapter, PHA. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Margaret Ann Stamps; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Newkirk; a sister, Lavene Holley; nine grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday at First Baptist Church Lambert's Point with the Rev. Anthony C. Paige officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Riddick Funeral Service. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Friday. The family will be at her residence.
