It occurs that he has been quite sick for some time and the medicine he had been taking was in a bottle on the table by him. To remove a bad odor in the room, carbolic acid was used and the bottles became mixed, and the attendant, in giving the sick man his medicine, accidentally administered it from the wrong bottle, and the mistake resulted in the death of the patient in a short time. An inquest consisting of surgeons from the ship and Navy Yard rendered a verdict in accordance with these facts. His remains were brought ashore and buried with the usual honors, not less than 150 or 175 men from the ship attending in a body. Additional Comments: From his tombstone, his last name was Woods.
