James Henry Woodworth, Welfare Worker, Succumbs to Illness The Rev. James Henry Woodworth, 73 years of age, operator of the Helping Hand Mission at Crawford and Queen streets for a number of years and more recently at Water and Queen streets, died yesterday afternoon at 12:30 o'clock at his home in Churchland. Mr. Woodworth is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillie Woodworth; three daughters, Mrs. Joseph T. Price, of Highland Park; Mrs. Josephine Mais, of Churchland; and Mrs. Muriel Groom, of San Francisco, Cal.; one son, B.L. Woodworth, of Portsmouth; three stepsons, Otis F. Price, of Spain, James T. Price, of Highland Park, H.F. Price, of Portsmouth; one adopted son, William R. Clayton, of the U.S. Coast Guard; an adopted daughter, Mrs. Mary Biddle, of Westhaven and 13 grandchildren. The deceased was a member of the order of Odd Fellows. Mr. Woodworth was employed for many years by the Portsmouth and Norfolk County ferries and had retired from service for some time. Since his retirement he had conducted charitable service on his own initiative and largely at his own expense among individuals and families in destitute circumstances through his Helping Hand Mission. In his work among the poor, Mr. Woodworth provided many a person without a roof over his or her head lodgings and food at his Helping Hand Mission. Families that became stranded here have found Mr. Woodworth's Mission a haven for them in their time of need. Body of the deceased was removed to the Snellings Funeral Home to be prepared for burial. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. *********************************************************************** The Rev. James Henry Woodworth, 73, operator of the Helping Hand Mission at Water and Queen streets, who died Saturday afternoon at 12:30 o'clock at his home in Churchland, will be buried this afternoon in Magnolia Cemetery, Berkley. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock at the Snellings Funeral Home in Portsmouth.
