H. J. Wright, Ex-Old Dominion Dean NORFOLK - Retired Rear Adm. Harold J. Wright, 81, of 1025 Westover Ave., World War II veteran and former Dean of Men of Old Dominion College, died Sunday in Portsmouth Naval Hospital. A native of New York City, he lived here since 1949. He was the husband of Mrs. Helen Cahill Wright. He was the youngest American naval officer appointed to the planning staff for the invasion of Normandy. He initially was a teacher when the college was the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary. From 1954 through 1963 he was Dean of Men at ODC, which later became ODU. He was a graduate of the City College of New York, which awarded him the Townsend-Harris Medal For World War II service he was awarded the Bronze Star and Naval Unit Citation. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Besides his widow, survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Henry A. Davenport of Roanoke and Mrs. Barbara W. Tyler of Stamford, Conn.; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Bouche of New York and Mrs. John S. Chodan of Berkeley, Calif.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at noon in Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. H.D.
