She was a native of Norfolk and the daughter of the late William C. Baker and Fannie Fentress Baker Thomas and the wife of the late Edward L. Wright Sr. Mrs. Wright was educated in Norfolk Public Schools, attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. and was a graduate of Wilberforce University in Xenia, Ohio. She was a faithful and lifelong member of St. John AME Church, Bute Street, Norfolk, having been enrolled in the Cradle Roll in 1910. She was a member of the J.C. James Fellowship Group and Lay Organization and formerly a member of the Nannie C. Phelps Missionary Society and the Louise Bell Grandparents Sunday School Class. In 1998, Mrs. Wright was honored as St. Johns "Mother of the Year." Mrs. Wright was also a former member of the Mount Herman Civic League, Portsmouth, the Virginia Federation of the Blind, the Endependence Centers Advocacy Action Group and the Mayors Task Force on Disabilities. She leaves to cherish her warmth and precious memory are a son, Edward L. Wright Jr. of Portsmouth; and three daughters, Willette Hines (Marvin) of Portsmouth, Frances Thomas (Richard) of Virginia Beach and Rose Odessa Thompson (Freeman) of Virginia Beach. She was predeceased by her sister, Willie Baker Mitchell and her son, Clayton Wright , who died in service during the Vietnam War. Mrs. Wright was also survived by 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Sentara Nursing Center on Greenwood Drive in Portsmouth. A funeral will be held at noon Tuesday at St. John AME Church, 545 Bute St., Norfolk. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Frances Thomas, 6316 Dickinson Way, College Park, Virginia Beach, VA 23464.
