Oscar Raymond Yates Jr. passed away on Dec. 31, 2000.

He was 76 years old and a native of Suffolk. He was the son of the late Dr. O. 
Raymond and Anne P. Yates also of Suffolk, and brother of the late Elyse Yates 
Byrd of Norfolk.

Mr. Yates was a graduate of Suffolk High School and the University of Alabama. 
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a former chairman of 
the American Humanics Board at Georgia State University. He served on the 
Board of Directors for the Atlanta Association for Retarded Children, the Boy 
Scouts of America-Atlanta Area Council, the Fertilizer Institute of North 
America, the Rotary Club of Atlanta and the Hermitage Foundation. He was a 
former director of the National Tennis Foundation-Hall of Fame in Newport, 
R.I. He remained a patron member of the Boy Scouts of America, and at the age 
of 13, he was awarded the badge of Eagle Scout.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Isabel Roper Yates; four daughters, 
Maida Yates Tipping of Virginia Beach, Anne Yates Wigbels and her husband 
Dennis of Atlanta, Isabel Kirkpatrick Fierer and her husband Richard of 
Atlanta, Sarah Yates Tatem of Virginia Beach; and five grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Elmwood Cemetery 
in Norfolk by the Rev. Calvin G. Gardner. In lieu of flowers, memorial 
donations may be made to either the Boy Scouts of America or the Virginia 
Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Laskin Road 
Chapel is handling arrangements.
