Yoder Jr. passed away Nov. 29, 2006, in the early morning during the night's sleep at his Larchmont home after a long battle with diabetes and congestive heart failure. He was predeceased by his parents, Sterling N. Yoder and Mary Lewis Yoder, both lifelong Norfolk natives. He is survived by his brother, Richard L. Yoder and his beloved labrador, Dee. Sterling was a lifelong resident of Norfolk. After graduating from Larchmont Elementary, Blair Middle and Maury High School, he took a B.A. degree in history from the University of Virginia and earned a commission to ensign in the U.S. Navy. After five years in the Navy, he began his teaching career with Norfolk City Schools and took a master of education degree from Old Dominion University. He served at Blair, Northside, Booker T. Washington and finally, returning to his alma mater, Maury High School. During his career he touched the lives of many people. Service to God through his church was a big part of his life. He was baptized at Larchmont Methodist Church and transferred to the Episcopal Church when he was 12. He had been a member of The Church of the Ascension for most of his adult life. Sterling also was an outdoorsman, member of the Isaac Walton League, a model train and ship builder and collector, a Virginia wine enthusiast and a docent for the USS Wisconsin BB-64 with more than 500 hours of service. He donated a 30-inch model of the Wisconsin that he himself built to the USS Wisconsin BB-64 Foundation. He will be missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends at the H.D. Oliver Funeral Home, Colonial Ave., at 7 p.m. Saturday. A memorial service in celebration of Sterling's life will be at the Church of the Ascension on Newport Ave. at Talbot Hall Drive at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Church of the Ascension.
