Although she lived with her son, Davis, in Newton, Mass., throughout most of the 1990s, she was forever a ``Virginia Pearl'' - from her roots as the daughter of a Chesapeake Bay oysterman, to her beauty, grace and characteristic white hair. Mrs. Young was born in Hampton on Jan. 17, 1909, to Capt. Thomas P. Davis and Undine Wiggins Davis. There she graduated from the Academy of Hampton Institute and went on to receive a diploma in 1927 from the Oberlin Kindergarten-Primary Training School in Ohio. She continued her undergraduate studies, concentrating in library science, and was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree at Hampton Institute in 1932. Whereas Mrs. Young began her career as a teacher, her marriage in 1931 to P. Bernard Young Jr., son of the founder of Norfolk Journal and Guide, thrust her into a world of journalism and entrepreneurship in Norfolk. Motherhood came first, of course, and she managed the home while her husband, Bernard, was often away on reporting assignments, especially as a correspondent during World War II. When the war was over, however, she went back to work in 1945, first as a librarian at the newspaper, then held positions as reporter and women's editor until her retirement from The Norfolk Journal and Guide in 1982. Her husband died in 1974. While raising three sons and contributing to the family business, Mrs. Young involved herself in numerous civic, community and social activities. She worked on voter registration, fund raising and church projects. Memberships included the Urban League, St. Theresa's Guild and the Women of Grace Episcopal Church. In 1964, she received a special honor as a civic leader from the Legal Defense Fund. Iota Phi Lambda recognized her as their Professional Woman of the Year in 1974. She was a member of the Links Inc. and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She explored the world of literature through the Women's Club of Norfolk and competed in the Merry Wives Bridge Club. Throughout her life, Mrs. Young was devoted to her family, young and old alike. She was a caregiver for her handicapped son, P. Bernard Young III, and numerous elder relatives who lived in her home. She enjoyed travel and spent many summer vacations on Martha's Vineyard, Mass., with her son, Davis' family and granddaughter, Elizabeth. Mrs. Young was predeceased by her parents, Thomas P. Davis and Undine Young Bassette; her brothers, William G. Davis and Thomas P. Davis; husband, P. Bernard Young Jr.; and two sons, Thomas Davis Young and Davis Chatham Young. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her eldest son, P. Bernard Young III of Norfolk; two daughters-in-law, Betty Jones Young Dowling of Washington, D.C., and Bashie Nails Young of Newton, Mass.; a granddaughter and her husband, Elizabeth Young Fenty and Russell Norman Fenty Jr. of Chilmark, Mass.; and a grandson, Thomas Davis Young of Newton, Mass. She is also fondly remembered by numerous other relatives and friends. A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Hale Funeral Home, Norfolk. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church, 1400 E. Brambleton Ave., Norfolk. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery . In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Grace Church Restoration Fund, 1400 E. Brambleton Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23504, or to the Davis C. Young Scholarship Fund, c/o BankBoston, 114 Dudley St., Roxbury, Mass. 02119.
