He was a native of Philadelphia, and was the son of the late Michael and Barbara Lux Zingraff. Matt was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine Venuto Zingraff and his second wife, Bessie Cox Zingraff; brothers, John and Michael Zingraff; and sisters, Helen di Vertola and Betty DeMarco. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II as a tank destroyer commander of the 773rd Tank Destroyer Battalion, where he received the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and the Award of the French Legion of Honor. He took part in the European Theatre of Operations, landing in Utah Beach near the St. Germaine de Varreville on Aug. 7, 1944, fighting through France, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Germany and Czechoslovakia. Matt retired from Norfolk Shipbuilding and Dry-dock. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Lord Baltimore Assembly, No. 2570, Prince Frederick, Md. He is survived by his two daughters, Lucille McGraw and her husband Dwight and Peggy Ratliff and her husband Jeff; two sons, Matthew Zingraff Jr. and his wife Anne and Michael Zingraff and his wife Caren; a stepson, Wayne Wyvill and his wife Debbie and a stepdaughter, Wanda Cox; grandchildren, Lauren, Kevin, Owen and Maddi Zingraff, Dwight McGraw III, Jason and Brandon Ratliff and Wesley, Rebecca and Zachary Wyvill; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Hailey Zingraff. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Monday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m. with The Rev. Monsignor William Pitt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. A Christian wake will be held in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Sunday at 4 p.m. followed by a visitation until 5:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Social Ministry, 154 W. Government Ave., Norfolk, VA 23503.
