He was born April 25, 1954, in Norfolk to parents Mary Anne (Decker) and John Thomas Zoby. He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, Rose Marie Decker and Peter George Decker, Sr., and Nellie (Kayatt) and Thomas Zoby; and many loving aunts and uncles. He is survived by his aunts, Ruby Decker and Bess Decker, and a host of cousins, who considered him more like their brother. He had a large circle of friends; the family would like to especially thank his friends, Ronnie McCubbins and Chuck Carballo, who were always there when he needed anything, including a babysitter for his beloved dog, Kiki. Johnny made friends wherever he walked through a door and was always welcomed warmly. He was a graduate of the Barry Robinson Center in Norfolk and attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, making many lifelong friendships while there. He traveled the world while employed with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and was later employed with International Longshoreman Association Local 970 until retirement. Immediately following retirement, he went on an extended trip to Amsterdam, where he sampled the city’s many delights. He was an organ donor, and in death, was able to pass on the living gift of sight. The world would be a better place if everyone saw life as he did: an opportunity to learn, explore, and have as much fun as possible. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his sense of humor, taste for adventure, and sly wit. We will be forever grateful to be able to say he was a part of our lives. A memorial service is planned for November 17, 2023, at 3 PM, at HD Oliver on Colonial Ave., Norfolk, VA. A private burial will follow at a later date at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be directed to Peter Decker Children’s Charity and/or The American Heart Assoc.
