Mr. Zoby was born in Norfolk, to the late Ernest Joseph Zoby and Loretta Blanche Thebarge Zoby. He was the widower of Karen Smith Zoby. Gerard was a graduate of Norfolk Catholic High School, Class of 1960, where he was also a faculty member and played on the track and football team. Mr. Zoby was admitted to the Virginia State Bar in 1968 and was a member of the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia. He earned his A.B. degree from Belmont Abbey College and his J.D. degree in 1967 from the University of Virginia. Mr. Zoby is a member of the Norfolk-Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Virginia State Bar and American Bar Associations, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the U.S. District Supreme Courts. He also served as a commissioner in Chancery, City of Norfolk from 1980-1997. He practiced law with the law office of Peter G. Decker Jr. until 1978. He was in private practice until 1985, at which time he and James O. Broccoletti founded the law firm of Zoby & Broccoletti. Mr. Zoby also was a member of the Delta Episolon Sigma Fraternity, Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity, and Phi Alpha Delta-honor Society. He was a Mason with Naomi Lodge No. 87. Mr. Zoby was affiliated with Camp PD Hunt Club and Sunbeam Hunt Club. Mr. Zoby was an avid fisherman, hunter and wildlife enthusiast. He was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his three daughters, Courtney Zoby- Howard and her husband Kevin of Virginia Beach, Allyson Zoby Kuriger and her husband Nick of Richmond, Dr. Meredith Zoby and her husband Dr. Layne Fielder of San Antonio, Texas; his brother, Vincent Zoby and his wife Mimi of Newport News; four grandchildren, Riley, Waverly, Madison and Nicholas. A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Monday in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Father Cristiano Brito, OSB. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk. The family will receive friends in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Norfolk Catholic High School J. Gerald Zoby Memorial Scholarship Fund.
