Spencer Gaskins {Seal} At a Court of monthly sessions held for Northumberland County at the courthouse on Monday the 11th of October 1802. This deed of Gift was acknowledged by Spencer Gaskins, a party thereto and ordered to be recorded Teste Fleming Bates c?c Truly recorded Teste Fleming Bates c?c From LDS Film # 32684: Pages 466 and 467 JESSE CROWDER In the name of God, Amen, I Jesse Crowder of Northumberland County & state of Virginia do make ordain and declare this instrument of writing to be my last will and testament revoking all others Imprimia My debts of which there are but few and none of magnitude are to be punctually paid. Item It is my will & desire that all my estate both real & personal shall remain together in full possession of my loving wife Elizabeth Crowder so long as she shall remain my widow, except the property I shall otherwise dispose off for the purposes herein mentioned, but if she should marry its my will and desire that she shall have no part of my estate neither real or personal. Item I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Crowder the plantation I now live upon to him and his heirs lawfully begotten of his body forever after the death or marriage of his mother, reserving at the same time a home on said plantation for the rest of my children until they shall come of age or marry, but if he should depart this life without an heir lawfully begotten of his body then it is my will and I give the land to my son Isaac Hurst Crowder to him and his heirs lawfully begotten of his body. Item I give to my son Isaac Hurst Crowder to him and his heirs forever one hundred pounds current money of Virginia, to be put out upon interest from the time of my death until he shall arrive at the age of twenty one years. Item I give to my three daughters Salley Hurst Crowder, Elizabeth Hurst Crowder, and Nancy Crowder to them and their heirs forever the sum of fifty pounds current money of Virginia to each of them to be put out upon interest from the time of my death until they & each of them shall arrive at the age of twenty one years or marry and it is my will and desire that my executor hereafter mentioned shall put the money which I have given my children out upon interest to such persons as he may think proper, and change the nature of the debt whenever he may think it is in danger of being lost. Item It is will and desire that my sorrel horse and fifteen head of horned cattle, shall be sold to the best advantage in order to make out the money given to my children in this will, supposing that the debts due me together with the sale of this property will be a sufficiency. Item I give and bequeath the whole of the balance of my estate after the death or marriage of my widow which consists of negroes, horses and stock of different kinds together with my household furniture and plantation utensils and everything else that belongs to me at present, or that may hereafter belong to my estate to be equally divided between my five children as they arrive to lawfull age or marry, to wit Salley Hurst Crowder, Thomas Crowder, Isaac Hurst Crowder, Elizabeth Hurst Crowder,and Nancy Crowder, to them and to each of them and their heirs lawfully begotten of their bodys forever. Having an opinion that the estate which Mr. Isaac Hurst, dec’d, (who was father to my wife) willed to his son Kemp Hurst, after the death of the widow of him the said Isaac Hurst, and mother to the said Kemp, both real and personal estate, so far as was never in possession of him the said Kemp Hurst, in his life time, should be at the death of the widow of Isaac Hurst dec’d. equally divided amongst the heirs of him the said dec’d. he the said Kemp Hurst dying before he had possession of said estate, in order to be satisfied about the same It is my will and desire that my executor will take counsel from one of the best General court lawyers, concerning the same, and be directed according. If my wife should think proper after my death to take a grown person in the house to live or board with her, which it is my particular desire she will not, I do request & it is my will that my executor shall make the person or persons whoever they may be pay the sum of twenty five pounds pr annum each for board. Item I give and bequeath to Jesse Crowder Adams the natural son of Nancy Adams, the sum of five shillings and no more of my estate either real or personal. Lastly I do hereby nominate and appoint my loving wife executrix of this my last will and testament. Given under my hand and seal this thirtyeth day of March one thousand eight hundred and two. Waddey Thomas Hurst At a Court of monthly sessions held for Northumberland County at the courthouse on Monday the 11th of October 1802 This last will and testament of Jesse Crowder decd was proved by the oaths of William Dodson and Thomas Hurst witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded, and Elizabeth the widow of the deceased in open court renounced the provision made for her therein, and on her motion a certificate is granted her for obtaining letters of administration on the estate of the decedent with the will annexed and together with David Ball Junr Thomas Gaskins and Thomas Hurst her securities entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of Eight thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs.
