First, I give to my son Joseph Harcum the plantation I now live on including the land I bought of Solomon Crowe to him and his heirs forever provided he Joseph Harcum will give to my son James O Harcum his plantation he bought of Thomas Toulson, and to pay James O Harcum the sum of five hundred dollars in five annual installments to bear interest as they become due, but, should Joseph Harcum refuse to comply with my request then in that event I give the above said land to James O Harcum and for him to pay tp Joseph Harcum the same &c. I give to my daughter Emeline L Haynie the plantation I bought from John B Kenner and the piece of land adjoining it I bought from Miss Robinson lying on the fresh pond, and to have no more of my estate. Also I give to her children one negro woman Aggy and her increase as they now stand: and to come, but for her, Emeline L Haynie to have the use of them during her life. But should Emeline L Haynie have no children at her death then in that case the above named negroes to revert back to my children or grandchildren. The growing or matured crop of all kinds on the farm is to go to either of my above named sons that complies with my request. The balance of my estate whatever it may be I give to my named daughters Maryetta E Leland, Williel Ann Harcum, Elphonsa Harcum,and Euphosia Harcum. In witness my hand and seal this 4th of September 1857. Samuel Harcum N.B. My sons Joseph Harcum and James O Harcum will take the administration of my estate without giving security; also it is my wish that my son Joseph or James O takes the management of my two yonges [youngest] children. Furthermore, I do solemnly hope that honourable Court will receive this as my last will & testament. Samuel Harcum State of Virginia Northcumberland County Court February 10th 1862 This will & testament of Samuel Harcum deceased was this day presented to the Court, Andrew J Brent and Thomas S D Covington being duly sworn deposed severally that they are well acquainted with the testator's hand writing & verily believed the said will to be written by the testator's own hand. Whereupon the said writing is admitted to probate as the last will & testament of Samuel Harcum deceased. On motion of James O Harcum and Joseph Harcum the Executors therein named who made oath, entered into & acknowledged a bond in the penalty of twenty four thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs a certificate is granted them for obtaining probat of the said will in due form.
