These electronic pages cannot be reproduced in any format for profit or other presentation. ---------------------------------------------- Will of John Lunsford In the name of God Amen I John Lunsford of the County of Northumberland being in health and of sound mind and memory thanks be to God for the same and knowing it is appointed once for all men Temporally to dye and knowing the uncertainty of Death do make and ordain this to be my last Will and Testament revoking all former Wills and Testaments &c heretofore be me made Item I give & bequeath all my worldly estate in the following manner which it hath pleased God to bless me with, after all my just debts and funeral expenses being first paid To wit I give and bequeath unto my nephew Griffin Copedge all my Land in Northumberland County which my father devised to me by his last Will and Testament to him and his heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath unto my nephew Griffen Coppedge my negroe Boy B__ to him and his heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath unto my Niece Sharlotte Copedge my negro man Moses, to her and her heirs forever. Item I give the use of all the remaining part of my estate not already given unto my Sister Wilmouth Copedge during of her natural life and after her death I give & bequeath the same to be equally divided amongst her Children, to wit, Griffin, Sharlott, Lucy and Augustin Copedge to them and their heirs forever. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto put my hand and Seal this seventh Day of December, and in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and ninety two. John Lunsford Sign'd Seal'd & acknowledg'd in the presence of Mosley Nutt. At a Court of monthly session continued & held for Northumberland County at the Courthouse on Tuesday the 18th of April 1794 This Writing purporting to be the last Will and Testament of John Lunsford deceased was this day offered for proof, and it appearing to the Court by the oath of Mosley Nutt and Richard Lunsford that the same was wholly written by the said John Lunsford the same is ordered to be recorded, Whereupon on the motion of Richard Lunsford a Certificate is granted him for obtaining Letters of Administration on the estate of the said John Lunsford decd. with his said Will annexed in due form he having taken the oath of an Administrator with the Will annexed, and together with Mosely Nutt and John H. Tallen(?) his Securities entered into & acknowledged a Bond in the penalty of six hundred pounds conditioned as the Law directs. [Record Book 15, page 48, Northumberland County, Virginia] ____ Will of Joseph Lunceford In the Name of God Amen I Joseph Lunceford of Northumberland County and Parish of Great Wiccomoco being weak in body but of perfect sense and memory (thanks be to God for the same) And Calling to mind the mortallity of my body & knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do appoint, Constitute and ordain this to be my Last Will and Testament & principally & first & first of all I Commit my soul to God, that gave it and my body to the earth to be buried in a Christian like & decent manner at the discression of my Executors hereafter named & touching such worldly goods where with it hath pleased God to bless me with in my Lifetime I give and dispose in the following manner and form Imprimis I give and bequeath to my son Joseph Lunceford that Land he is now living upon and to his male hears (sic) Lawfully begotten of his body forever my will & desire is that he shall not Lease nor release bargain nor sell the aforesaid Land Item I give and bequeath to my son Tapply Lunceford the other half of my Land I now live upon to him & his male heres (sic) Lawfully begotten of his body forever my will & desire is that he shall not Lease nor release bargain nor sell the aforesaid Land my will and desires is if Joseph Lunceford dies without a male heir it shall fall to Ellis Lunceford to him & his male Heirs Lawfully begotten of his body forever my will and desire is if Tapply Lunceford dies without a male Heir his part of the Land shall fall to Elexander Lunceford to him & his male Heirs Lawfully begotten of his body forever if they all Deceas (sic) without a male heir Lawfully begotten of there (sic) body my will and desire is that Winifret Bennet Lunceford shall be heir to the whole hundred acres of Land to her and her heirs forever I give & bequeath to my son Shadrach Lunceford one shilling sterling to be paid by my Execr. I give & bequeath to my son Joseph Lunceford one shilling sterling to be paid by my Exer. I give & bequeath to my son Elexander Lunceford one shilling sterling to be paid by my Exes. I give & bequeath to my son Ellis Lunceford one shilling sterling to be paid by my Exes. I give & bequeath to my son Tapply Lunceford one shilling sterling to be paid by my Exes. I give & bequeath to my Daughter Barbary Rilay one shilling sterling to be paid by my Exes. I give & bequeath to Joshua Gaines one black pide heifer one chest one small kettle to him & his Heirs forever I give & bequeath the Remainder part of my moveable Estate to my Daughter Winifret Bennet Lunceford to her & her heirs forever My will & desire is that my son Joseph Lunceford shall be my Executor of this my Last will & Testament. Joseph Lunceford (by his mark) Witnesses: Robert Angel Billy Angel Joshua Gains (by his mark) At a Court held for Northumberland County the 14th day of January 1782 This Last will and Testament of Joseph Lunceford Deced. was presented in Court by Joseph Lunceford the Executor therein named who made oath there to according to Law and the same being proved by the oaths of Robert Angel Billy Angel & Joshua Gains the subscribing witnesses thereto was admitted to Record & on the motion of the said Executor giving security & Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form. [Record Book 11, page 131, Northumberland County, Virginia] ______ Will of Moses Lunsford In the name of God amen I Moses Lunsford of the County of Northumberland in the parish of Wiccocomoco being weak of body but of perfect sense & memory thanks be to God for the same do make this my last Will & Testament in manner & form following VIZ Imprimis I give my soul to God who first gave it me & my body to the earth in sure & certain hopes of a resurrection to eternal Life Item I give the use of my tract of Land and plantation which I purchased from John Cooke to my loving wife Elizabeth to work her slaves on for her support and for no other use or purpose during her single life and after her death or marriage I give the said Land to my Grand son Sterling Lunsford to him and his heirs forever provided he relinquishes all his right and Interest to his fathers Land which he purchased of Richard H. Payne also I give the use of my sorrel Horse and one good feather Bed & furniture to my loving wife Elizabeth during her single life Item I give those Slaves which I formerly lent to my son Moses who now is deceased and their Increase to wit Daniel Minea Eleanor Milly Hannah and Alse and their future Increase to be equally divided amongst my said son Moses's Children to wit, William Augusten Sterling Seth Judeth and Moses and that they be possessed each with their parts as they severally arrive to the age of twenty one years or day of their Marriage and until then it is my will and desire that the said Slaves be kept together for the support of my said sons widow, If she remains a Widow and the aforesaid children nevertheless there shall be reserved out of the aforesaid Slaves at the division of them as aforesaid a Childs part for the use of the said Widow during her single life Item it is my Will and desire that my negro woman Lucy which I formerly lent to my said son Moses be sold & the Cash arising thereby be applied towards the payment of my said sons debts and those other Slaves which I formerly lent to my said son Moses to wit Moses and Judd I give them to the ___ that my said son did apply them it being my consent that that is to say towards purchasing a Tract of Land from Richard H. Payne and all the moveable estate which I did possess him with I relinquish all claim to, Item I give unto my son John all the Land which I purchased from William James, Moses Sutten and Thomas Robb and appurtenances also those slaves which I have already possessed him with that is to say Spencer, Harry Moses N__ Clarke Hannah &c with their increase to him and his heirs forever Item I give & bequeath unto my son Rhodam all my Lands in Lancaster County which I purchased from John Payne and appurtenances and all those slaves which I have possessed him with to wit; Peter Abraham Nathan and Jane and her increase and all the moveable Estate which I have possessed him with to him and his heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath unto my son Richard my Land and appurtenances whereon I now do live and also my slaves to wit (men) Spencer and Roger & Girl Lida and my boy Moses to him and his heirs forever Item I give & bequeath unto James Talley my Negro man Jesse and my negro Girl Esther and her Increase when he arrives to the age of twenty one years or after without lawful issue of his body my will and desire is that the said slaves with Esthers Increase be equally divided amongst the whole of my Children as aforesaid and those herein and after mentioned to them and their heirs forever Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Betty Gibbons all those slaves which I have already possessed her with to wit Tom Chloe Milly and Polly and their increase (Polly I replaced in lieu of Charity who was formerly lent Charity having bed qualities &c thought it would be more advantageous to my said daughter that she should be sold) and also the moveable estate which I have already possessed her with and is now considered do part of the Estate of John Gibbons dec. to her and her heirs forever Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Wilmouth Copedge all those slaves which I have possessed her with to wit, George Ned, Joshua and Winny and the moveable estate which I have already delivered her to her and her heirs forever Item I give bequeath unto my daughter Hannah Helms all those slaves which I have already delivered her to wit Solomon Abb and Rachael and their increase and also the moveable estate which I have delivered to her and her heirs forever Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Caty my slaves to wit Daniel, Ephraim and Dorcas and my bay horse Colt to her and her heirs forever Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Frances my negro man slave Isaac, (boy) Kit and Girl Mima and my black Cole to her and her heirs forever Item I give and bequeath all the remainder of my Slaves not already Given to be equally divided among my three Children namely Richard Caty and Frances to them and their heirs forever Item I give all my moveable Estate not already given to be equally divided among my four Children namely John Richard Betty and Frances after my debts being first paid to them and their heirs forever Item it is my will and desire that my Executors hereafter mentioned have full power to Act as Trustees to James Tally and that they be possessed with the Slaves and their Increase given to the said James when he arrives to the age of twenty one years on the Conditions aforesaid on behalf of the said James and that the Annual profits of said Slaves be applied so much as are Conveniently wanting to the better support and Learning of the said James and the residue if any be reserved for his use when he comes to the age of twenty one years Item I do appoint my friends Mr. Hopkins Harding and Mr. Henry Cundiff whole and sole Executors of this my last will and Testament lastly I do revoke all other Wills by me made & acknowledge this to be my last Will and Testament In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 15th day of February 1790. Moses Lunsford Sign'd seal'd published and declared by the within named Moses Lunsford to be his last will & Testament in presence of Moseley Nutt David Palmer Daniel Mosby (or Mosley) At a Court held for Northumberland County on monday the 11th of October 1790. This last Will and Testament of Moses Lunsford deceased was proved by the Oaths of Moseley Nutt, David Palmer and Daniel Mosby (Mosley) the Witnesses thereto & ordered to be Recorded and on the motion of Henry Cundiff one of the Executors named in the said Will Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probat thereof in due form he having taken the oath of an Exor. And together with Moseley Nutt Isaac Basye & Moses Sutten his Securities entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of two thousand pounds Conditioned as the Law directs Liberty being reserved to the other Exor. named in the said Will to join in the probat thereof when he shall think fit. [Record Book 14, page 380, Northumberland County, Virginia] _____ Will of Swanson Lunsford In the name of God Amen I Swanson Lunsford of the County of Northumberland being sick & weak in body but of Sound & perfect memory thanks be to god for it I do make & ordain this my Last will & testmt. in manner Following first I bequeath my Soul to God who gave it me my body to the Earth its Original in hopes of their Joyfull Meeting at the resurrection of the Just through the meditation Intercepsion & merits of my Compleet redeemer Jesus Christ, and I do think it proper Settle my worldly goods & Estate which God hath Pleased to give me in the manner following Item I leave unto my beloved wife all my whole Estate Enduring her Lifetime to bring up my Children Nancy Lunsford John Lunsford Eliza. Lunsford & Edwin Lunsford till they come to the age of twenty years Item I give & bequeath unto my son Isaac Lunsford my dwelling Plantation & all my Lands to him & his heirs & assigns forever Item I give & bequeath unto my son Jesse Lunsford one negro fellow named Peter to him & his heirs & assigns forever Item I give & bequeath unto my daughter Nancy Lunsford one negro Girle named Nell to her her heirs & assigns forever Item I give & bequeath unto my son John Lunsford one negro Girle named Ester to him his heirs & assigns forever Item I give & bequeath unto my son Thos. Lunceford one negro wench named Cate to him his heirs & assigns forever Item I give & bequeath unto my son Edwin Lunceford & Eliza. Lunceford one negro Boy named Spencer to them their heirs & assigns forever my will is that if Either of them should died without heir that the other Shall have the whole Item I give and bequeath unto my son Swan Lunsford ____ pd. ten Shillings Currt. money to be raised out of my Personal Estate to him & his heirs & assigns forever & that he Shall have no more of my Estate Item I give & bequeath unto my daughter Susanna James fourteen pounds Currt. money with what I have already Given her to be raised out of my personal Estate to her her heirs & assigns forever & mo more of my Estate Item my desire is that the rest of my Estate may be Equally divided among the rest of my Children that is not Cutt off I do appoint my beloved wife & Cozen William Barrett to be Executors of this my Last Will & Testamt. as Witness hereunto I set my hand & Seal this Eight day of April 1758.
