He had been quite a sufferer for two hears, having undergone several operations, one in May and another in June, 1921, and again in April and May, 1922. Since the 1st of this year he had been constantly confined to his bed, with no hopes of his recovery. Nothing was left undone to make the ill man as comfortable as possible trained nurses being constantly at his bedside. Funeral services were held at the home at 2-30 in the afternoon of Friday, the 6th, conducted by Rev. R. L. McNair, of Coneord (sic), a former pastor of the deceased, assisted by Rev. Dr. J. C. Reed, of the Methodist church, followed by interment in family section in Lake View Cemetery. Deceased was the son of the late Charles Wesley Carter and Mrs. Nannie Stokes Carter, and would have been 46 years old the 2nd of June. He had been deaf since infancy, but continued to be able to talk and understand practically every thing said to him. He was never very strong, but prior to his illness of two years ago, did what work he could willingly and cheerfully. Besides a mother, deceased leaves three brothers, H. C., C. O., and R. R. Carter, and one sister, Miss Mattie Carter. H. C. Carter resides at Hopewell, R. R. in Lynchburg, while the other brother and sister reside here with their mother. - - - - - - - - Funeral of W. E. Her husband died December 14, 1907. She is survived by four children, as follows, Henry C. Carter, of Hopewell; R. Rawleigh Carter, Roanoke; C. Oliver and Miss Mattie Carter of Blackstone. Mrs. Carter was truly "a mother of Israel." She was a woman of very strong personality and of clear judgement and of unusual executive ability. She was quiet in her nature, gentle in her disposition yet always firm in her convictions and decided in her sense of justice. She had many friends to whom she was much beloved as a neighbor. She was a most faithful member of Blackstone Presbyterian Church. She loved her Saviour whom she had served through all the years until she heard the summons "Come up higher."
