OWNERS: This place was first owned by Shore, possibly Henry Shore. I cannot find out exactly what years they lived there, but is must have been before 1800. The Fosters lived there after the Shores did and each have a cemetery there. Landon P. Jones of Crewe, Virginia, present owner. (1937) DESCRIPTION: There is not house on this place. It having burned years ago. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Foster burying ground is back of the garden and covered with periwinkle. It has a wire fence around it. No tombstones and the appearence of a wilderness. The Shore burying ground is some distance back of the location of the remains of the house, in the edge of the woods. It was enclosed with a four foot brick wall, one foot thick. Within the brick wall are two slabs, one in the left hand corner, the other in the opposite right hand corner. There are no signs of other graves there yet. I am told there were certainly other graves within the wall and that just on the outside is the grave of a trusty old slave. The following inscriptions are found: Sacred in the memory of Eliza Epes Shore Wife of Henry E. Shore born October 1, 1804 departed this life July 24, 1842 This heavy loss to her husband and only child is her eternal gain. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. Sacred to the memory of Mrs. Louisa Jones Shore who was born October 23, 1801 and departed this life in the hope of the gospel May 5, 1823 This stone is erected as a token of the affection by her husband, Robert Shore. Her flesh shall slumber in the ground, Till the last trumpets joyful sound, Then burst the chain with sweet surprise And in her Saviors, image rise.
