NOTTOWAY COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – “Roseland” Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Roseland: 1937 Apr. 5 Research made by H. E. Rorer Cemetery Location: Nottoway County, Virginia DATE: 1811 (home built) OWNERS: Elisha Dickinson, 1811 Colonel William Purnell Dickinson, 1874 William Duprey Dickinson, 1874 to present. (1937) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: “Roseland” has never been out of the Dickinson family and is now (1937) occupied by a grandson of the builder. It was named by Colonel Purnell Dickinson for his third wife, who was Miss Rosamond Smith of Lunenburg County. Back of the Roseland house in the garden we find the Dickinson cemetery. This seems to be characteristic of the old families, to bury their dead in the garden, the idea seems to be to keep them as near the old home as possible. On either side of the gate entering the garden are two very large boxwoods twenty feet tall and branching out to sixty feet in circumference. A walk leads on to the cemetery, which has recently been enclosed with a wall of granite blocks. It seems to have always been well kept. We find the following inscriptions: Our Father William Purnell Dickinson Born September 2, 1810 Died October 6, 1874 He rejoiced believing in God Our Mother Rosamond wife of William Purnell Dickinson Born June 20, 1833 Died September 3, 1896 Looking unto Jesus SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informant: William Duput Dickinson, present owner.
