Cemetery Location:  2.5 miles from St. Mark’s Church, right turn, 1.5 miles 
                    country road.
                    Nottoway County, Virginia

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:

“Woodland”, on Nottoway River, was built in 1807 by Kenner Cralle, born 1774, 
whose wife was Nancy Hatchett.  Kenner Cralle was the father of George A. Cralle 
of “Elmwood” and Grief Cralle, who never married.  Grief Cralle inherited 
“Woodland” and lived there until his death.  He was a man of very forceful 
character.  It is interesting to note that he once changed the course of 
Nottoway River bordering on his plantation.  There are four hundred and twenty-
five acres in the place.  Major Leroy Long once lived here and later moved to 
“Hickory Hill”.

Back of the house were found the following inscriptions on tombstones:


Sallie M. Cralle
Wife of George A. Cralle
Born November 6, 1812
And died February 22, 1862
Asleep in Jesus,
Peaceful rest,
Whose walking is supremely best,
No fear, no woe shall dim that house
That manifest the Savior’s power.


George A. Cralle
Born December 11, 1807
Died June 6, 1875
Why should I mourn my husband’s loss,
Since he in death is blest
He lives again, in faith he died,
And Christ has promised rest.
Erected by his devoted wife Kate.


Grief P. Cralle
Born  August 2, 1805
Died January 23, 1879
Blessed are the pure in spirit
Children of the heavenly One
They shall wear a crown of glory
When the work of life is done.
