Deed Book 1, pg 57

This indenture made and entered into this 7th day of October in the year of 
our Lord Christ One thousand seven hundred eighty nine Between Charles Winfrey 
of the county of Nottaway and Shadrack Holt of the said County.  WITNESSETH 
that the said Charles Winfrey for and in consideration of one hundred pounds 
of good and lawfull money of Virginia, which the said Charles Winfrey is 
justly indebted unto him and honestly desires to secure and pay to him and for 
and in further consideration of the sum of Five shillings of good and lawfull 
money of Virginia to the said Charles Winfrey in hand paid By the said 
Shadrack Holt on or Before the sealing and delivering of these presents, the 
receipt whereof is honestly acknowledged and thereof and every part thereof 
doth exonerate and discharge the said Shadrack his heirs executors --- and he 
the said Charles Winfrey has granted, bargained sold and confirmed & by these 
presents, doth grant bargain sell and confirm unto the said Shadrack Holt and 
his heirs forever one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the 
county of Nottoway & containing by estimation Three hundred acres be the same 
more or less and lying on the waters of Ellises fork of Flatt Creek it being 
the land the said Charles Winfrey bought of John Roberts adjoining the Steph 
Roberts lines and Thomas Wommacks lines with all appurtenances belonging or in 
any wise appertaining to the premises hereby granted --- intended to be 
granted and reversion and reversions, remainder & remainders and all service 
benefit and profit of the said land and premises and all right claim interest 
and hereby ---- to the same TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the said land & premises unto 
the said Shadrack Holt his heirs forever and the said Charles Winfrey does 
hereby grant for himself and his heirs that he the said Charles Winfrey and 
his heirs and every of them shall and will warrant and forever defend the said 
land and premises by every part thereof with all and singular their right & 
appurtenances unto the said Shadrack Holt his heirs forever against him the 
said Charles Winfrey his heirs and every of them and against every other 
person or persons whatsoever upon Trust (?)

NONETHELESS the said Shadrack Holt his heirs --- & assigns shall after the 
Twenty fifth day of December one thousand seven hundred and ninety or as soon 
after as the said Shadrack Holt shall think proper or the said Charles Winfrey 
shall request whatsoever of these two considerations shall first happen sell 
for the best price that can be gotten after ten days publick notice the said 
land and of the money arising from such sale discharge pay & satisfy himself 
the above one hundred pound and lawfull interest of like good and lawfull 
money of Virginia till the same shall be fully discharged and the expense of 
drawing & recording this Indenture and the contingent charges of the sail 
(sic) aforesaid or performing anything that is or shall be necessary to the 
interests of the said Indenture and the said Shadrack Holt his heirs or 
assigns shall pay or cause to be paid unto the said Charles Winfrey his heirs 
or assign the overplus if any remains after such sale.  IN WITNESS whereof the 
said Charles Winfrey hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day and year 
first above written
