One such source was Mr. S. Farrow Styles of Houston, Tx a descendant of John Payne Hill. She write (part of a long letter) Matilda Payne Hill was the Widow of Colo. Henry Hill [Colo. in the War of 1812]. She was born in 1797, the daughter of John Payne of Orange County and his Wife, Susannah [Suckey] Lindsay. Susanna or Suckey was the Daughter of Adam Lindsay and Elizabeth Garnett, the Daughter of James Garnett and Sarah Taylor, Daughter of William Taylor Matilda's Husband, Colo. Henry Hill, was a successful business man and went security for a friend. He had to make good the friend's debts and that wrecked the family fortune. He died in 1846. His Son, Thomas Robert Hill, came to Texas in 1848 for his health. You know climate was very important in those days. In 1850 my Grandfather, John Payne Hill, an Attorney, came with his first Wife and family to Texas. His Wife died and he sent the Children back to his people in Virginia and they stayed some time with Matilda Payne Hill. Matilda bought land in Titus County, Texas and wanted to come to Texas but Susan would not hear of it saying she feared she could not endure the climate, the same climate, mind you, her Brother was seeking. She probably could not bear the thought of leaving Virginia I know of another family in Virginia who had a prayer service prior to starting for the "wilds of Texas" in 1888, when the father was to take charge of the street railway system in Waco, Texas After all the frontier had made consi-derable progress or it would not have had a Street Car system. Any way the family did not boast about their home to be in fact the older members of the family suggested that they not tell anybody where they were going unless they had to. A photo of this Matilda Payne Hill proudly adorns one of the Antient Press Books, A Digest of Orange County Wills 1734-1838. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following are taken from the Antient Press book, A Will Digest of Orange County, Virginia Wills 1734-1838.
