   Know all men by these presents that I William Chisholm of the County of Orange for and in 
consideration of the sum of forty pounds current money to me in hand paid by James Rains of the County 
aforesaid, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge, have bargaines, sold and delivered and do by 
these presents bargain, sell & deliver unto the said James Rains one hundred and sixty six acres of land 
lying and being in the County of Orange on the Rappidan River and bounded by the including lines of two 
surveys as followeth.  Beginning at a spanish and ? oak corner to Thomas Mitchell on the south side the 
Rappadan river thence S 87 poles to three red oak saplings thence N 66 degrees E 38 poles to three pines 
thence S 72 E 148 poles crossing mountain run to three white oaks in the log grounds on the said run 
thence N 58 E 126 poles to a small sycamore on the aforesaid river thence up the said river the several 
courses to the beginning..............
