F. Mitchell, dec'd. A Deed wherein Wm. F. Mitchell loaned funds to Stratton to buy a piece of land, leaving Mrs. Mitchell, administratrix of her husband's estate, to collect. This Deed made the 22nd day of November in the year 1879, between R. H. Stratton and M. E. his wife of Gordonsville Orange County Virginia of the one part and J. R. Gentry of the said town of the other part: Witnefseth that the said R. H. Stratton and M. E. his wife do grant and convey unto the said J. R. Gentry with general warranty of title all that certain lot or parcel of land situate lying and being in the town of Gordonsville in Orange County Virginia known as the "Wagon Yard Lot" and containing one acre more or lefs it being all that lot of land conveyed to said R. H. Stratton by John R. Gentry trustee for C. V. Beale the wife of C. W. Beale, C. W. Beale and C. V. his wife by that deed bearing date the 5th of April 1877. And recorded in the Clerk's Office Orange County Court Book 49. Page 446. And is bounded as follows to wit. Beginning at a stake in Dr. A. S. Cadmus' line thence with said line n 33 1/2 degrees W 13 poles to a stake corner in said Cadmus' line thence N 56 1/2 degrees E 11 1/2 poles to a stake thence S 361/4 degrees E 7 3/5 poles to an oak tree corner with Haufmann thence S 10 degrees E5 9/10 poles to a stake in the margin of South Mainstreet corner with R. S. Bruce and thence S 56 1/2 degrees W 9 9/10 poles to the beginning: IN TRUST to secure to Mrs M. S. Mitchell administratrix of Wm. F. Mitchell dec'd the payment of the sum of three (3) bns as executed by R. H. Stratton in favor of the said Mrs M. S. Mitchell administratrix as aforesaid each bearing date the 2nd dayu of February 1879 and payable twelve months after date- the first being for the payments of the sum of three hundred and twenty five ($325.00) dollars with interest thereon from the date thereof till paid: the second for the payment of the sum of One hundred and twenty five ($125.00) dollars with interest thereon from the date thereof till paid and the third and last being for the sum of fifty ($50.00) dollars with interest from the date thereof till paid, and each of said bns as containing the waiver of the benefit of his homestead exemption as to the obligation. Witnefs the following signatures and seals R. H. Stratton (seal) M. E. Stratton (seal) State of Virginia Orange County to wit I P. P. Barbour a Notary Public for the County of Orange in the State of Virginia do certify that R. H. Stratton whose name is signed to the annexed writing bearing date the 22nd day of November 1879 hath this day acknowledged the same before me in my County aforesaid and I do further certify that M. E. wife of the said R. H. Statton whose names are signed to the said annexed writing bearing date as aforesaid personally appeared before me in my County aforesaid and being examined by me privily(?) and apart from her husband and having the writing aforesaid fully explained to her she the said M. E. Stratton acknowledged the said writing to be her act and declared that she had willingly executed the saime and does not wish to retract it. Given under my hand this the 22nd day of November 1879 P. P. Barbour, N. P. In Orange County Court November 25th 1879. This Deed of trust was received in the Office aforesaid, filed and together with the certificate thereon written, ordered to be recorded. Note by transcriber: William F. Mitchell, son of John and Nelly Slick(?) Mitchell, owned/operated a jewelry store, was robbed, and died "from a blow" May 24, 1878 at age 45. This left Mrs. Martha (Mattie) S. Davis Mitchell with 4 young children, per the 1880 census: Tommie, Sissie (Emma), Harry and Daisy. Martha, daughter of James and Sarah A. Davis, died of Consumption on April 29, 1886 at age 39. Emma Roberta Mitchell married George W. Blundell and they dairy farmed in Loudoun County, VA, raising 5 children. Daisy never married, lived in/near Baltimore, MD. Haven't yet tracked the two boys, but one may have been institutionalized, per family rumor.
