THOMAS PARISH, ORANGE COUNTY , VIRGINIA TO HIS CHILDREN TO ALL CHRISTIAN people to whom these presents shall come Greeting. Now KNOW YE that I Anthony Gholson of St. Thomas’s Parish in the County of Orange for Diverse good Causes & Considerations me there unto moving but more Especially for the love good Will & Tender Affection I bear unto my well beloved Children as shall be here after Named I do Give, grant & Confirm unto said Children the goods & Chattels as followeth Vizt., to my son William Gholson I give a Negro Man Named Tom also a Negro Boy Named Little Tom Also one Feather Bed & its Furniture, Also I give to my son Anthony Gholson a Negro Man Named Bob & a Negro Boy Named Cupit, also one Feather Bed & its Furniture, I also Give to my Daughter Eliza. Rice A Negro Woman Named Venus & a Negro Girl Named Mary, I also Lend to my Daughter Lucy Step a Negro Woman named Philles, and a Negro Girl Named Creece which said Negroes I lend her during her Natural Life & no longer & after the death of my said Daughter Lucy I give the sd. Negros with all their future Increase to be Equally Divided Between the Children that shall be born of the Body of my said Daughter Lucy, & I give her one Feather Bed & its Furniture, Also I give unto my Grand Daughter Jane Pollard one Negro Girl Named Sarah all which Negros & Feather Beds I do freely fully & absolutely give grant make over & confirm unto my said Children & grand Child as is above mentioned & in the form as above to have and to hold the above said Effects to them & their Assigns forever only what I lend to my Daughter Lucy shall be as is above said & I do hereby Warrant the same with all their future Increase unto my above sd. Children & their Assigns from any claim that shall be laid to them form any Person or Persons in any wise whatsoever but that the same shall be to the above mentioned Children to all intents & purposes as above sd. ONLY AND EXCEPTING I make a reserve of the above sd. good & Chattels unto my self & my wife Jane for & during our & each of our lives & that the same shall be & remain our & each of our possession during our Natural lives & after our Deaths the sd. goods & Chattels & everything above mentioned to be & remain unto the parties abovesaid in the manner abovesaid. THOMAS PARISH, ORANGE CO., VIRGINIA TO HIS SON JOHN GHOLSON THIS INDENTURE made the Eighth day August in the Year of our Lord one thousand Seven Hundred & Sixty Three in the Third Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third by the grace of God of Great Britain, France & Ireland King Defender of Faith &c Between Anthony Gholson of the Parish of St. Thomas & County of Orange of the one part & John Gholson of the said Parish & County aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said Anthony Gholson for & in consideration of his Fatherly Love to his Son the Said John Gholson doth give to him his heirs & assigns forever, after the death of the said Anthony Gholson & his wife one Lot of land I bought of Nathaniel Geer also one negro Wench named Judy Also one Negro boy named Ben also all my Stock of Horses and Cattle and all the remainder of my Estate whatsoever or if I should thereafter Buy Negros or Stock or household Stuff or Cash to him his heirs or assigns Forever with all the profits TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the said above mentioned things with their & Every of their appurtenances unto the said John Gholson his heirs & Assigns forever with all the profits Commodities appurtenances thereto Belonging with all Right Title Interest and Estate of him the said Anthony Gholson to the only proper use & behoof of him the said John Gholson his heirs & Assigns forever. Tom, Bob, Venus, Phillis, Judey, Creece, Ben, Little Tom, Cupid, Mary, Billy, all which negroes being Left and Given to me by my late Husband Anthony Gholson, Decd. for & During my Natural Life and the same negros as, Tom, Bob, Venus, Phillis, Judey, Creece, Ben, Little Tom, Cupid, Mary and Billey, I Do Give Grant make over and confirm unto my said Son John Gholson for and During the Term of my natural Life and no Longer and after my Decease then the said Negroes shall be and Return unto the rest of my Children as appointed by my aforesaid Husband Lately Decd. as by the Record of Orange County may be made appear. Also, I give in Like mannerall and ! every the Estate Real and Personal and all manner of Goods & Chattels in any wise whatsoever Left to me by my said Husband Decd. Unto my said Son John Gholson for and during the Time of my natural Life and he my said son John Gholson shall have hold use and Possess the above mentioned Negroes Goods & Chattels for & During the Time of my natural Life as aforesaid without the Sett hindrance or molestation of any Person or Persons Claiming any part or parcel Thereof but the same Estate both real & personal Shall be held and Possessed Quietly and Peaceably, by my said son John Gholson for and during the time aforesaid.
