  This may certify that John Groom now in the 39th year of his age-was detached 
under my command in the trenches before York on the 15th day of October 1781 
when he received a wound by a shot from the enemy which occasioned the loss of 
his leg--he was a militia man ordered from the County of Orange where he now 
lives to do his own tower (tour) of duty in Capt. Robt. Stubblefield's Company 
which was annexed to Col. Dark's Regt.  Given under my hand this 13th day of May 
17 1787.

  I do, with the advice of council, hereby certify that John Groom about 39 
years of age , late a private  in the Militia of Orange County whose pay was at 
the rate of 24 pounds per annum was wounded by the loss of his leg while in the 
service of the United States as to entitle him to the sum of 15 pounds yearly; 
which allowance accordingly made him, to commence on the first day of January 
1786.  Given under my hand as  Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, at 
Richmond, this 3rd  day of June1787.
