Murder in the First Degree.

Sam. Matthews, a negro preacher, was convicted in the Circuit Court of Fairfax, on 
Friday, of the murder in the first degree, for killing a negro named Thomas 
Garner. Cordelia Garner, the wife of Thomas, was tried as an accessory to the 
murder of her husband, and found guilty of murder in the second degree. -Matthews 
"preached" himself into the affections of Garner's wife, and killed him to get him 
out of the way.
