PAGE COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – John Canada Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, John Canada graveyard: 1936 Oct. 23 Research made by Vivian Black Cemetery Location: Near Route #660, a short distance after it crosses the Shenandoah River on the west side, and about 2 miles west of Route #12. Page County, Virginia DATE: 1743. OWNERS: The farm is now owned by Daniel Kibler (1936), and occupied by Philip Campbell. It was originally the John Bumgardner, the pioneer, farm, or more widely known as the Christian or Christly Bumgardner farm. DESCRIPTION: It is a private graveyard in fair condition. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: I have not been able to find how or when John Canada came to this valley. Some say he was with a party of explorers that came up the Shenandoah River from Front Royal, and after their return he came back. He was supposed to be the first white man to set foot on the highest peak in the Massanutten mountains, and this peak still bears his name, only the spelling has been changed from Canada to Kennedy. I do not know the reason for this, but I do think, as it is named for him, it should be spelled as he spelled his name. He lived with John Bumgardner and died at his home. He would go up in the Massanutten mountains and work in a silver mine but never told anyone where it was situated. He was a bachelor.
