PAGE COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Courtney Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Courtney graveyard: 1937 Oct. 27 Research made by Cannie C. Morris Cemetery Location: 4.5 miles east of Stanley, Virginia. 1/8 mile north of Route #624. Near the north bank of the little Hamshill Creek. Page County, Virginia DATE: About 1840 OWNERS: 1839, Thomas Pulliam deeded to Jacob Brubaker 1847, Jacob Brubaker deeded to William W. Jasper 1852, William C. Cave, Commissioner for William W. Jasper deeded to George Bailey 1899, George Bailey deeded to E.L. Keblenger DESCRIPTION: This is an old graveyard in very bad condition. It is covered with underbrush, and there are no tombstones with inscriptions. The markers are plain limestone rock. There was a wire fence around the graveyard but this is falling down, and the entire place is in a state of desolation. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This is an old graveyard which seems to have been a public burying ground, as both white and colored people seem to have been buried here. Bill Courtney and his wife were buried here about 1840, and his son Joseph Courtney and his family were buried here at a later date. In about 1850 a colored man by the name of William Jasper bought the place, and when he died he was buried here, as were members of his family, but there have been no interments here for a number of years. It seems that the older generation did not care about identifying the graves of their loved ones, as there were many old markers without inscriptions.
