PAGE COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Kennel Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Kennel graveyard: 1936 Oct. 24 Research made by Cannie C. Morris Cemetery Location: 2.5 miles northwest of Grove Hill, Virginia, and about 500 yards south of the old Catherine Furnace site. Page County, Virginia DATE: 1845. OWNERS: United States Government George Washington National Forest DESCRIPTION: It is in very bad condition, grown up in trees and bushes; in fact you can hardly tell where it was. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: It was started about 1845 by the man that worked at Catherine Furnace. Old slaves were brought over from east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, over around Gordonsville, to work at the furnace and would die and they would be buried here. Bob Kennel, who operated a boarding house at the furnace, and his family died and were buried here although there are very few markers and no inscriptions at all on the graves.
