Cemetery Location:  On the north side of Main Street, opposite the west entrance 
                    of Mimslyn drive, in the town of Luray, Virginia.
                    Page County, Virginia

DESCRIPTION:

This graveyard is several feet higher than the walk.  Near the northwest corner 
are two large pines and a very large oak – I’d say several hundred years old.  
In the northwest corner are several locust trees.  About in the middle of and on 
the west border is a monument erected to John Miller.  It was public, but no one 
uses it now.  It is in ill-kept condition.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:

On July 4, 1833, Gabriel Jordan and Betsie Ann deeded to George Young and four 
others, trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Luray, a lot adjoining the 
graveyard for the erection of a church building.  The church never owned the 
graveyard, but is has always been called the Methodist graveyard.  In an old 
News & Courier, property of Mrs. Ella Kibler, I found the following:  “The 
Methodist Church at this place will be town down tomorrow.  Services will be 
held in the grove some time next Sunday.”  The date was July 16th, the year was 
torn off.  However, Mrs. Kibler says it was in 1864 or 1865.  During the War of 
1861-1865 the Confederate Soldiers camped in this church and lot.  There are 
only a few remaining graves, most of the bodies having been moved to the new 
cemeteries.
