Morris Cemetery Location: Shenandoah, Virginia. West side of arch on south end of yards of Norfolk and Western Railroad, between the Railroad and the Shenandoah River. Page County, Virginia DATE: Oldest inscription, 1841. OWNERS: Methodist Episcopal Church South. DESCRIPTION: This cemetery is located in a beautiful spot overlooking the Shenandoah River, and is kept in splendid repair by the American Legion, in honor of one of their men who was killed in France, but is buried in this place. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This cemetery was started about the time the town was formed. It was then called The Forge because of the iron furnaces operated by William and Henry Forrer who were the founders of the town. In 1865 Mr. William Milnes came into great holdings here and changed the name of the place to Milnes. Mr. Milnes was a member of Congress from this District, and one of the most popular and enterprising men of his community. Since the death of Mr. Milnes, in 1889, the town has not grown. Before his death, however, the name of the place was changed again to Shenandoah, which means “A daughter of the stars”. The following are the inscriptions on the tombstones: Nancy Blakemore consort of Nathaniel Blakemore Born Dec. 28, 1820 Died Aug. 1, 1841 In Memory of Wm.
