PAGE COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Painter Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Painter graveyard: 1936 Nov. 23 Research made by Cannie C. Morris Cemetery Location: 1 mile northeast of Alma, Virginia, on the south side of Route #622. Page County, Virginia DATE: Around 1836. OWNERS: The present owner is R.J.R. Painter. (1936) DESCRIPTION: This is a private family burying ground in fair condition. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Here we find the old Painter graveyard that has been a family burying ground for about 100 years. First started by John and Delilah Painter burying one of their children here, and it was not long before John and Delilah were buried here. Martin and Ora Painter, son and daughter-in-law of John and Delilah, were buried here, with numerous others from time to time. Henry Painter was buried here in 1865. At the outbreak of the war Henry Painter did not want to fight, so he left home and went north and secured a job in a blacksmith shop; remaining there until the close of the war in 1865. Then he was on his way home and some of the Confederate conscripts came in contact with him and were going to kill him. So he asked for time to pray and he prayed a very long time, and some of the men got angry and cursed him and remarked that he “prayed too d--- long” and shot him and killed him while he was on his knees praying. He was killed in the pass on the Kettle Mountain just west of Alma, Virginia. Another very strange grave in this old graveyard is that of Bettie Stroope. She and two of her infant children are buried here in the same grave, one in each arm. Strange as it may seem, in this graveyard there is not a tombstone and there is not a name or a date on any of the markers of either old or new graves. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informants: R.J.R.
