Morris Cemetery Location: 1.5 miles northeast of river bridge at Grove Hill, Virginia, near the west bank of the Shenandoah River. Page County, Virginia DATE: Unknown. OWNERS: The present owner is Vernee Foltz. (1936) DESCRIPTION: This is a family burying ground in very bad condition, grown up in bushes and trees. The graves are all sunk in and the tombstones have all fallen down. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: George Summers enlisted in the 7th Virginia Cavalry when he was about 17 years old in the early days of the war. He was a very capable soldier and soon was advanced to a commissioned officer in the cavalry. Captain Summers served until the close of the war. He was on his way to get his discharge papers when he encountered trouble with Colonel Hussey’s men, part of the Northern army, on June 27, 1865 and he was arrested and taken over ear New Market at Rudes Hill to Colonel Hussey’s headquarters. There he was executed the same day without being tried. There stands a monument at Rudes Hill to the memory of Captain George Summers. His body was brought back home and buried here in the family graveyard. In Memory of Captain Geo.
