He was the fourth son born to William Green Martin and Celia Ann Hancock Martin both of Dodson. Like many other children born during this era, he worked on the family farm which was located near the cool waters of Puppy Creek. On February 23, 1905, he married Lula Frances Moran who lived on an adjacent ridge. Immediately they started a family as Dexter was born in 1907 and Lessie May was born in the following year. Another daughter Elsie Ada was born in March, 1910. Just a month after Elsie Ada was born on April 30, 1910, they purchased a residence and farm in Dodson from J.J. Moran. Based on location and relationship, it is to be assumed that it was purchased from James Josiah Moran. Another addition to the family took place in 1911 when Hassie Myrtle was born. Sadly the next nine years were extremely tough on the Martin family. In October, 1912, both Elsie Ada and Hassie Myrtle died within seven days of one another due to diarrhea and enteritis. The lone bright spot of this decade took place in 1914 when their last son Raymond Roscoe was born. Also during this decade, their first son Dexter passed away. All three kids are buried high on the mountain deep in the woods in the same remote area that all of them were born in Dodson near the old homeplace. In the 1920 census, the family was still residing and farming the land in Dodson. However sometime during this decade, the family made a major transition. The family moved to Fayette County, West Virginia as many opportunities presented themselves in the coal mining industry. The work was dangerous but financially rewarding as many men from the extremely rural areas of southwest Virginia made the trek to West Virginia in search of employment and a living wage to adequately provide for their families. They actually purchased a home in the Weirwood area of Fayette County, West Virginia on May 30, 1929. Both Richard and his wife Lulu lived in West Virginia until their deaths. On April 24, 1937, he died in West Virginia of a cerebral hemorrhage as he was pronounced dead at 2:45 PM by Dr. R.H. Jones. His body was brought back to Dodson and he is buried in the family cemetery that today is named after him. He is buried in the Richard Martin Family Cemetery along with his three kids. His gravestone is the lone stone in this long abandoned cemetery.
