He had a very interesting life although there are still many questions unanswered at this time. He was appointed as the second postmaster at Fayerdale in 1911 which became a booming little community in Patrick County. He was postmaster until August 1, 1919 when he was replaced by Julia Elgin. He was also a successful entrepreneur as he ran a store, W.D. Martin's Store at the corner of Fayerdale Road and Heidelbach School Road (SR712) for many years. In fact, verification has been obtained from The Enterprise that a representative from Stuart was assessing property values for the year 1933 and he was going to be at the store on Tuesday, April 11, 1933. On July 18, 1928, he married Mary Elsie Martin, the 22 year old daughter of Joseph Thomas Martin and Maggie D. Ashby Martin. She resided in the Meadows area of North Carolina near Red Shoals Road which apparently was in Stokes County. It is thought that perhaps he might have met her at one of the Primitive Baptist Association's meetings as his father William Green Martin was chosen by Stuart Primitive Baptist Church to be a messenger of the Association at Buffalo which was in Stokes County, North Carolina in the spring of 1927. That church is near this little community. On December 18, 1934, Mary Elsie passed away due to a condition called mitral regurgitation which is a heart issue. After that, his life really becomes mysterious. In the 1940 census, he was residing at the JEB Stuart Inn which was formerly the Perkins Hotel and had been residing there since 1935 so it is assumed that he moved to this venue right after his wife's death. Since he resided there in 1940, it would be safe to assume that he probably lived at that venue until it burned down on November 23, 1943. The next few years of his life are unknown although he passed away on April 21, 1948 in District Home in Chatham which was a venue for individuals that were destitute. The death certificate indicated that he had been residing there for four months at the time of his death. He was brought back to Patrick County and his service was officiated by the Elder Hollingsworth and was laid to rest apparently beside of his mother Celia Ann Hancock Martin in the Via Cemetery in Dodson, Virginia.
