BRIEF SKETCH OF THE SCOTT FAMILY A revision by Andrew Scott Dennison. Matthew Scott, the original settler, came from County Tyrone, Ireland, and, according to family tradition, settled in the eastern portion of what is now Floyd County about the year 1770. He is buried near his old home, in Salem Primitive Baptist Churchyard, and his tombstone bears the following inscription: "Mathew Scott, died 1818". The name of his wife is unsure at this time. They had two sons, John Scott and Thomas Scott, both of whom married girls of German descent. They also, possibly, had two daughters. Note: The actual spelling of Matthew Scott's first name is unclear. In the original sketch, he is mentioned as 'Matthew' and as 'Mathew' on his tombstone. In the book "Floyd County - A History of its People and Places" by Dr. Amos D. Wood, his name is spelled as 'Mathew' with 'Matthew' being on his tombstone. Thomas Scott married Sarah (Sallie) Shelor.
