Benjamin was born about 1800 in Guilford Co., NC and died 19 August 1870, at Ridgeway, Henry Co., VA, at age 70 years. Virginia, was born 22 May 1803 in Patrick Co., VA, she died after 1870, location not known with certainty. Benjamin Frazier, son of David Frazier and Sarah Mary Bulla, descendant of Alexander Frazier and Catherine Glenndunning, of Scotland, their son Alexander Frazier, born about 1685 in Scotland, migrated to America. He married Sarah Coppock 1715-16 in West Kennett, PA at the "Quaker Monthly Meeting". She was also born inScotland. Some of their children migrated to Randolph, Rowan and Guilford Counties,NC, then on to Virginia. Virginia (Jenny) Fulkerson, was the youngest daughter of the eleven children born to James William Fulkerson Sr. and Nancy Martin. The Fulkersons were descendants of Dirck Volckertszen "De Noorman" – a member of the small Scandinavian community living among the Dutch in New Amsterdam. One oral family tradition holds that he came from Bergen, Norway, while others recall Dutch lullabies from the colonial era. It is speculated that Dirck was a ship's carpenter, born about 1600, who probably emigrated to work in New Amsterdam's fledgling shipbuilding industry before 1630. Dirck married Christina Vigne on Manhattan Island in 1630. Her family was among the 24 French Walloon families who first colonized New Netherlands in 1624, and among the minority who actually settled on Manhattan Island in that year. Dirck and Christina raised a large family in the area now known as Wall Street and across the river at Greenpoint. The patronymic naming system began to fade away after the British captured New York in 1664 and the family surname evolved into Fulkerson, a name familiar in the British Isles. By 1757 many of the Fulkersons were beginning to fan out in all directions. Jenny's family went to North Carolina in that year and then to Virginia in 1761. Her great-grandfather Frederick was killed by Indians in Scott County in 1774. Her grandfather Fredrick Fulkerson was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Patrick County militia in 1775 [reference number NSDAR #797373+A850]. In 1828 Benjamin Frazier began purchasing land in Patrick County and by 1850 he had land deeds from George Carter, Frederick Critz, James Fulkerson, H. W. Gunter, Nathaniel Smith and the heirs of Anderson Allen. Of special interest is the 133 acre tract from the Allen heirs for $995. This was the "Yellow Sulphur Springs Tract", on which Benjamin built what later became known as "Patrick Springs Hotel". It is possible that this ambitious enterprise caused his financial difficulties and led to his Deed of Trust on 15 July 1856 with Rufus Turner to secure debts and the later sale by Frazier and Turner to Asa Wood and others. Benjamin and Virginia had eight sons and two daughters, all born in Patrick County. Ann Mariah married Peter Alexander Lee, 14 August 1845 in Patrick County, he was the oldest son of John G Lee and Susan Frans. Joseph M. married Judith Ann Hereford 1848 in Rockingham Co., NC. Sarah E. married Hamon Critz 1849 in Patrick County and James William married Sabrina Blackard 1857, also in Patrick County. Peter F. married Victoria Dunovant 1863 in Henry Co., VA. Albert married probably in Kentucky, to a woman named Elizabeth (maiden name may have been "Johns"). Unknown if Zachariah T, married. Brice M., Benjamin T. and Samuel C., were unmarried and died young. As a result of financial difficulties, Benjamin and his older sons may have moved out of Patrick county to find work, as only Virginia and sons Samuel C and Zachariah T, are found on the 1860 census for Patrick County. The Civil War and service in the Confederate Army soon brought additional hardship and sorrow to the family as four of the sons, (Benjamin T., Brice M., James William, Samuel C.) and son-in-law (Hamon Critz) died during this period of conflict. Peter F. served from Henry Co., in "Company A, 42nd VA Infantry." Albert served in "Company I, 24th VA Infantry", was captured and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Zachariah T. served in the 5th Virginia Reserves. No service record found as yet for Joseph M. Frazier. 1870 Census for Horse Pasture, Henry Co., VA, finds Benjamin (Frasure), living with son Peter F. and family, listed as a 70 year old wagon maker. Benjamin died 19 August 1870 at Ridgeway, of "chest dropsy", as reported by son Peter F. Frazier. The 1870 census for Louisa City, Lawrence Co., KY., finds Virginia (Frasher) age 66, born in Virginia living in home of son Albert and his family. Virginia (Jenny) Fulkerson Frazier is not found again on census. Peter Alexander and Ann Mariah Frazier Lee had migrated to Larmar Co., TX, as shown there on the 1860 Census, with five of their eight children. One son Peter Robert Lee died in Patrick County before they left. They named their next child, another son, Peter A. Lee born about 1855, in Patrick County;as shown on 1860 census in Lamar Co., TX.. Peter served in the Civil War with "Daniel's 9th Texas Field Battery". He died in 1868 leaving Ann Mariah to fend for their remaining young family. She never remarried, she collected Peter's CSA Pension in her later years, she died 27 March 1906 in Lamar Co., TX. Their oldest son, John William Lee, born 1846 in Patrick Co., VA, was my Great Grandfather. He married three times, father of nine children. He lived in Texas but, died 6 May 1918 at age 72 years, on a trip to Oklahoma.
