Gains, John James, John Frans Jr., George Clark, Sharp Barton, Samuel Corn, James Epperson, John Tatum, & John Fletcher were Sworn a Grand Jury of Inquest for the body of this County, whereupon they withdrew to Consult on their Presentments. Nathaniel H. Claiborne is appointed Deputy State attorney for this County in the Place of Samuel Duval, who have Resigned. (1 May 1801) Hanby for Benefit of Mitchell v Spaulden Sr. a Jury Swo., to wit, David Harbour, Larkin Price, William Fuson, Samuel Harris, William Durham, Thomas Penn, Robert Sharp, John Hanby Jr., Harvey Fitzgerald, John Frans, William Adams & Samuel Hunt. Verdt. retd. for the Plt. for £19.3.10. Damages & O.R. Michaux v Brewer Jr., a Jury Swo., to wit, Robert Sharp, David Harbour, Alexander Lackey, Thomas Penn, Samuel Hunt, William Durham, Thomas Mitchell, William Fuson, Harvey Fitzgerald, Samuel Talbott, John Frans Jr. & John Mankin. Verdct returnd for the Plt. for £15.0.3. Damages & O.R. JULY COURT (29 July 1801) Administrtion of the Estate of Abraham Penn deceased is Granted Ruth Penn Widow and relict of the said decedant, George Penn, and Gabriel Penn, Who Qualified according to Law, and together with Wm. Hannah, Samuel Staples, Joseph Stovall, Brett Stovall, Robert Rowan, William carter, Josiah Farris, John Frans, and Hamon Critz their securities who entered into Bond and acknowledged the same according to Law. William Banks, James Taylor, John Finney, Peter Frans and Jacob Critz or any 3 of them are appointed appraisers to the said Estate Who are hereby Ordered to make report and return an Inventory thereof to the Court. Josiah Farris foreman, George Clark, Robert Hudspeth, James Bartlett, Richard Mills, William Sharp, John Finney, James Carlin, James Turner, Peter Frans, John Spencer, Wm. Green, Thomas Dillard, John Hale, Samuel Strong, and Palmer Critchfield were sworn a Grand Jury of Enquest for the body of this County whereupon they withdrew to Consult on their Presentments. AUGUST COURT (27 August 1801) James Thompson is Appointed Surveyor of the Road from Spoon Creek to Jacob Critz in the Place of said Critz & the list filed be his Gang. Ordered that the Road leading from William Banks by Brett Stovalls be turned from the said Banks to Jacob Critzs by the Meadow Meeting house and that Wm. Adams the Present Survey keep the same in repair according to Law, and that the former Way be Discontinued. Wm. Hannah, Richard Hopkins, Samuel Crutcher & Nathaniel Shelton or any 3 of them are appointed to View away for a Road from the Henry Lyne below Kogers Old Field to Haman Critz, and make report thereof to the Court. SEPTEMBER COURT (24 September 1801) John Adams is appointed Surveyor of the Road from the Creek at James Taylor to Joseph Goings in the Place of John Medley Sr. & the list filed be his Gang. Ann Jones, wife of William Jones, appeared in Court and was Privily examined and Relinquished her Right of Dower in and to three hundred acres of land conveyed and mentioned in the Indenture made by her Husband to Charles Crutcher. Administration of the Estate of Elijah Bellow deceased is Granted to Rachel Bellow widow and Relict of the said Decedent & to Eli Bellow, Who Qualified according to law together with Edward Tatum & L.S their security entered into Bond & acknowledged the same accordingly. Stephen Lyon Gl. Produced in Court his Commission appointing him Sheriff of this County to take effect at the expiration of the former Sherif, and at the same time Offered to the Court Sufficient Security for his faithfull performance as Shf. during his continuance in office, & on Consideration thereof the Court were of Opinion that he had not applyed in two Months as Directed by the Law and the Clerk having Certified accordingly & the Mo. of the said Stephen Lyon was overruled. An Inventory of the Estate of Benja. Martin retd. & Ord to be Recorded. Moses Freeman, Bartlett Smith, Richd. Atkinson & David Rowark or any 3 of them are appd. to appraise the Estate of Elijah Bellow decd. and return an Inventory thereof to the Court. Daniel Frans is appd. Surveyor of the Road from the South Mayo near Henry Francis to the North Carolina line & the list filed be his Gang. OCTOBER COURT (29 Oct 1801) Hanby for Benefit, Mitchell v Wm. Price, a Jury Swo. to wit, Hiram Wills, John Askins, William Keaton, William Carter, Drury Bondurant, Stephen Maynor, Geo. Lackey, Benjamin Hancock, Moses Reynolds, John Medley, Joseph Going, & Samson Jones. Verdct returned for $50.95 cents Damages & O.R. Stephen Lyon Gl. appeared in Court and Presented a Commission from his Excellency James Monroe Governor of this Commonwealth, dated at Richmond the 18th day of July 1801 appointing him Sheriff of this County whereupon the said Stephen Lyon together with George Hairston, Haman Critz, his securities entered into 2 Bonds for that Purpose Conditioned according to Law who acknowledged the same acordingly. On Mo. of Isham Burnett Ordered that a Writ of Adquodamnum issue Priviledging Him to build a Water Grist Mill on the fork of Smith River, he being owner on both sides. The last Will and Testament of Ann Easley deceased was exhibited on Court by Warham & Joseph Easley the Exors therein named Proved by the oath of one of the Witnesses thereto Subscribed & Ordered to be Certified and the said Warham & Joseph Easley Qualified as Exors according to Law and entered into bond Conditioned accordingly.
